We're looking at scanners for BMV in C/S (go-live next spring?). Preliminary
testing with Symbol tethered model DS6608-HD200001 looks promising - but
expensive at ~ $ 500 per scanner.

Since more drugs are showing up with composite stacked bar codes we're limiting
our testing to 2D scanners. The 1D portion of the medication composite bar
code contains the NDC and scans with a 1D scanner just fine into Meditech, but
the stacked 2D component contains expiration date and lot number and can be
decoded only with a 2D scanner (which also decodes the 1D portion into Meditech
correctly). The decoded composites end up 30 or more characters long, which
demonstrates the ability of a 2D barcode to cram a lot of info into a little
space on a tiny unit dose tablet package. Best I can tell, Meditech isn't
doing anything with the expiration date/lot number info provided in the
composite bar code, yet.... Our hope/guess is that Meditech will eventually
incorporate the outdate feature that they now do for the (slightly weird) NDCEX
pattern. This feature alerts the nurse at time of administration in BMV if a
drug is outdated.

Brian,

We also tested the Symbol scanners and found that the Handheld scanners
(both tethered and wireless) were more user friendly.

Subject: [MEDITECH-L] BMV and barcode readers

We are preparing for BMV and are trying to select a scanner.

We have computers in most rooms. We recognize that we can't leave
un-teathered readers in the rooms (we've had monitors and CPU's leave in
patient's luggage.) We thought the nurse could carry a wireless scanner
with them while administering meds, but are concerned that one scanner
might affect PC's in the adjacent rooms as well.

I reviewed the L-archives and found a dozen or so messages from
different hospitals indicating which scanner they used.

We decided to trial two Symbol devices. The LS4278 (wireless) and
LS2208 (wired). I then went to CDW.COM to order one of each. They have
10 or more different varieties of the each model!

What is your experience with barcode readers? We really want a 15 foot
long cable for the wired devices. I think the standard is nine feet.

What specific model do you use; what issues do you have with them; do
the wireless scanners "bleed over" to other rooms? Are there scanners
that have, lets say, three frequencies, that the nurse can easily switch
between "A", "B" and "C"? We could configure the PCs to not share the
same frequency as an adjacent room.

We appreciate you sharing your experience.
