Did JCAHO clairify the standard for electronic data? If we have to apply the
JCAHO standard, then Meditech's EMR or other clinical modules (we're C/S)
don't meet that standard. What do they have in mind for paperless facilities?

College of Ameican Pathologists states in checklist item GEN.41096 among
elements to be on the paper or electronic report:

"5. Date of release of report (if not on the report, this information should
be readily accessible)."

I've been through CAP inspections for >15 years, and use of the internal
inquiry has always been acceptable. By using internal inquiry, the actual
date/time of each test is readily accessible going back to our very first
Meditech specimen. That's the whole intent of maintaining this vast amount of
data.

This gives me the shivers. It's one thing to add a data element to a paper
report and it's a shame that any laboratory has to rework reports for something
that contradicts CAP. But I am more concerned abuot standards they may write
relating to electronic reports, as we keep advancing toward a paperless
environment.
