Before filing your Medispan update, you need to run the "FSV Non-Matching List" in your Formulary Service Menu. When I run this list, it is usually about 30 pages and it will list every drug in your drug dictionary that has an NDC that does not connect with an NDC in the Medispan file. It will also show you, if you request it to, NDC's that will automatically be replaced with new ones. The list will suggest alternate NDC's to use - often I have to go to my shelves to find the current NDC. In any case, you will need to manually update the primary NDC number and then I usually run it again to make sure that my changes connected with an NDC on the Medispan list or to catch entry errors.
