12-month delay in NPI use granted 
You'll get an extra 12 months -- until May 23, 2008 -- until mandatory
use of the National Provider Identifier (NPI) takes effect, as long as
you show you have made a good faith effort to comply with NPI rules, CMS
announced late yesterday. 
The contingency plan allows you to continue to use your UPIN/PIN on
Medicare claims past May 23, and follows industry clamor that practices
would not be ready to report only the NPI. CMS acknowleges these
concerns in its announcement.
