April 3, 2007 12-month delay in NPI use granted You'll get an extra 12 months -- until May 23, 2008 -- until mandatory use of the National Provider Identifier (NPI) takes effect, as long as you show you have made a good faith effort to comply with NPI rules, CMS announced late yesterday. The contingency plan allows you to continue to use your UPIN/PIN on Medicare claims past May 23, and follows industry clamor that practices would not be ready to report only the NPI. CMS acknowleges these concerns in its announcement.
