We are having a problem with our outpatient chemo center entering
orders on the last day of the month which are due for the 1st day of the
next month. For instance, an order is entered on November 30th with a start
date of December 1st. When the November claims are printed, the 12/1 charge
is on the November claim. I've told the pharmacist that no orders should be
entered within a month except for medication to be administered that month.
He says that this causes a lot of extra work on the 1st of the month because
patients are coming in early for chemo and between entering the orders and
preparing the chemo, he is really rushed, which in turn could lead to an
error.
I fully understand that because the 12/1 charges pass over on the 11/30
billing log is the reason this is happening. However, one would think that
there would be some sort of parameter when generating claims for November or
some other method that would keep any December charges off of the November
claim. Does anyone know of a solution to this? My guess is that a lot of
pharmacists don't even know that this is happening because until I saw this
on a claim myself, I didn't know. Evidently, the folks in billing were
taking care of this without notifying us of the problem.
Thanks,
Charlie
