Restricting users by location helps, but staff can still pull a wrong account if using the name. Outpatient visits are still accessible for restricted users if the look up patient by name. Stressing the account number is the best solution . We don't allow orders on discharged patients either which helps.

I hear that public floggings work well...

Aside from that, you can reduce the errors by setting the MIS Users to
be restricted by location. (Pt access Restricted by location? = Y).
People will only be able to enter orders for patients registered to the
unit (location) there device is defined to be on. There is, however, a
lot of setup and upkeep to this option.
Is it Friday yet...
Hope it helps...

We have a recurring problem with staff (physicians, nurses,
ward clerks, etc.) placing orders on the wrong inpatients.
Sometimes this is due to patients having the same or similar names.
Although staff are encouraged to identify patients by account
number they tend to identify patients by name. This is not
a frequently occurring problem but one wrong order is too many.
Has your facility experienced this type of problem and have you
implemented any creative solutions?
