We have seen a few places that allow this. We are planning on setting up wireless access so
that external users do not have access to our network and just to the Internet. Our network
engineer says this can be accomplished easily. So it'll be like the corner coffee shop.

/I haven’t heard of any hospitals that allow this. If you were to let a
patient bring in their laptop on your network and, let’s say, they bring
in a virus that wreaks havoc on your network, along with other patient’s
computers, who is liable? Not just that, but I believe that this would
create possible HIPAA issues if a patient were intelligent enough to
connect to a server or pc on the network that had PHI on it. I could
see this working if you set up a separate network just for patient
access; one in which they would have to sign a release that the hospital
is not liable for any damage that may come from use of the service or
from malicious intent of others that are on the network. It would be
similar to the set up at many hotels where they are on one network and
they provide a separate WiFi connection for their patrons./

Our patients are now asking for internet access while they are
recovering in our hospital.
Does anyone provide a patient with a laptop or desktop with internet
access if requested ?
Or, if a patient has his/her own computer do you allow them to use them
in the patient room
and do you provide internet access ?
Thank you
