My guess is that your ipfwadm settings are screwed up.
nslookup uses UDP to connect to the DNS server, ping uses ICMP.
All the stuff you have problems with uses TCP. So I would start investigating in
that direction. MTU should not matter in this case, since MTU would affect
everything.
