This sure seems like either your modem or the remote modem is hanging up.
What modem do you have on your side?
If its a USR modem, you can go into Minicom right after PPPd hangs
up and type in ATI11 and see why the modem hung up. Other modems
might have similar a feature but you'll have to look it up in
the manual.
