You did not specify your configuration so let me tell you about a similiar
experience...

I have an ISP which provides Cable Modem server that is asymetrical. Uplink
side is DIALUP, downlink is via CTV. Both the Cable Modem AND the Linux box,
and a few WIN98 machines are connected to the same HUB/Concentrator.

After getting this running in Linux and Masq, I noticed that frequently I
was not obtaining optimal xfer rates (on the downlink side).

Linux would frequently give me steady xfer bursts of up to 220kb/sec.

My "primary" WinBlows machine would barely result in 50kb/sec under optimal
conditions...

I started timing all of my computers... and I noted that other machines were
producing close to the same speeds as my Linux box (as clients for Masq).

Apparently some application I had installed hosed the throughput.

A disk reformat, and bam, I'm back up to 180kb/sec. (heh, 3 news feeds from
3 different servers at the same time, into one Masq client machine).

Morale: It wasn't my Linux box!

If your cable modem is bi-directional CTV and your Linux box has a fast
enough processor throughput should not be a problem...

You might want to consider using two NICS, one for your Cable Modem, the
other for your Lan to minimize collisions... once you get things really
rolling....
