how are you connected to the net? by modem, cable modem, adsl, isdn, 
what? Makes a small difference. I am connected by adsl which gets 
assigned its ip by dhcp automatically on bootup (assuming the dhcp client 
and the relevant nic is setup)

YES I am running these scripts with only one modification (changed ppp0 
to eth1 in the vaiable definitions at the begining of the script), but the NO is 
that masqed boxes are able to do smtp, pop3 and www, but ftp doesn't 
work properly, I am tracking down the problem with help of some list 
members and will post once I have a solution.

Just curious are you using the single computer firewall/samba setup from 
chapter 8 or the separate (more secure) setup of chapter 10+
I am using the 2 linux boxes with a firewall subnet as in chapter 10+
