Because the local irc server sees your address as being the private address
192.168.1.77 (or 177) and is unable to negotiate a connection between that
and an outside world IP addresss. You don't get "masqued" when you connect
directly to the local irc server.

I've had some success with running SOCKS on the gateway and connecting to
the irc server via proxy. I know Mirc is able to do this; I can't speak
for Linux irc clients.
