I had some similar problems, I think, and I can't remember the details and
don't have the details handy, that you need to set a route in
/etc/ppp/ip-up, otherwise everything (including traffic for the local
subnet) goes to the internet. Take the route back down again in
/etc/ppp/ip-down.

I have the following set up working OK except for a glitch with routing.
The setup is as shown:

[Internet] <--> (eth0) Masq box (dial-up ppp) <--> Win98 box
------------------------------ ---------
eth0 IP= aaa.bbb.ccc.240 (Masq box)
default router = aaa.bbb.ccc.1
ppp0 IP= 192.168.0.8

The Masq box accepts incoming dial-up ppp connections and routes packets
to/from the internet just fine. Problem is that it fails to route packets
to/from the subnet that the Masq box is on to the dial-up ppp. In other
words my dial-up ppp line can see all of the internet except the subnet
that the MASQ box is on. Makes no sense, does it? It doesn't even see the
Masq box itself.
If I assign an IP to my ppp line in /etc/ppp/options.ttyS1 that is on the
same subnet as the Masq box (thus not using IP Masq) everything works OK.
But putting aaa.bbb.ccc.240:192.168.0.8 in options.ttyS1 makes the subnet
aaa.bbb.ccc. unreachable.
Followed the Masq "how to" to get to this point. Searched the mailing list
archive but didn't see this exact problem.
Suggestions?
