In the end, I reinstalled windows on the client machine. This of course,
worked. But not before I'd installed and ripped out half a dozen nics,
rechecked the cable/s, and done every setup step a hundred times.
I suspect that the dufus at the pc store where I bought the client windows box
screwed up the installation.
Lets add this to the faq: when in doubt, reload windoze
