At the point this error occurred I did not have a VPN connection established. 2. Although I compiled IPSEC into the kernel, I doubt if I will ever use it. 3. I think SSH uses normal IP protocol and doesn't need any kernel modifications. When I sent the original email I could move back and forth between kernels and get the problem to reappear everytime I ran the newer kernel. I put that kernel aside but needed VPN a few days later so I rebooted into it. For the heck of it I tried an emacs session (not while VPN connected) and got no errors.
