Depends on exactly what you mean. Do you, for instance, have an
ethernet hub, and you connect the modem to the hub along with all the
other nodes on your network? If so, that means the ethernet traffic
goes from the masq'd box, to the masq box, then to the cablemodem,
traversing the network TWICE on its way out, and twice more when the
return traffic comes back. That means you're doubling your network
load, and the packets are timed close together, meaning that they have a
higher chance of colliding with each other as they try to get on the
network. You will probably see slower speeds.
Best way to go is to set up two separate ethernet segments, one for the
cablemodem, the other for your masq'd LAN.
