Greenland will get leverage over whom? How, exactly? Greenland has no industry, to speak of. There’s probably a lot beneath the ice, but they’re incapable of acquiring it. They’d have to ship it — they don’t have the roads or the ports to do that. How is all of this supposed to happen? Someone is going to have to do it. Whoever does is going to control Greenland. Canada is well positioned to do the mining, but they are not capable of defending Greenland against hostile takeover. Some alliance between the United States and Canada seems likely, which is why Canada will probably join the US one way or another.
Of course acquiring Greenland is about China. I don’t think it’s Trump‘s obsession though. I think it’s just the changing world.
