Two-hundred years ago this week, a small group of Muscogee Creek Nation chiefs led by William McIntosh accepted a payment of $400,000 and signed the Treaty of Indian Springs <https://hnn.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=191ccdd6c73c5afeafd52cfb8&id=d2df088fda&e=5ad0217db7>, ceding all Muscogee land in Georgia and three million acres in Alabama to the United States. For this treasonous act, McIntosh was sentenced to death by the Creek National Council, which then succeeded in negotiating a new treaty <https://hnn.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=191ccdd6c73c5afeafd52cfb8&id=3e5d92994e&e=5ad0217db7> with President John Quincy Adams that would allow many of the Creek to remain on their lands and retain their landholdings in Alabama.
The governors of Alabama and Georgia, however, forcefully resisted this new treaty. President Adams threatened federal intervention, but backed down after Georgia activated its state militia.
