On January 17, 1893, an insurgency led by a group of American and European
businessmen, and backed by U.S. Marines, announced the overthrow of
Hawaii’s Queen Liliʻuokalani. The queen had been resisting the efforts of
pro-business elites to pave the way for annexation by the U.S., and was
attempting to restore voting rights to the majority of Hawaiians who had
been disenfranchised six years earlier by a constitution forced on
Liliʻuokalani’s brother.
In the wake of the successful coup, businessman Sanford Dole was declared
president of the Republic of Hawaii. His government’s campaign in favor of
annexation was rebuffed by President Grover Cleveland, but in 1898,
Cleveland’s successor William McKinley signed a joint resolution of
Congress declaring Hawaii to be a U.S. territory. Ninety-five years later,
Congress would issue another resolution apologizing for the U.S. role in
the overthrow of Queen Liliʻuokalani.
