Did Mao and the people at the top KNOW how much starvation occurred as a result of "mistakes" in the Great Leap Forward??? ---
I recall efforts to minimize the food crisis in the early 60s --- Edgar Snow wrote a piece for MR about the "facts" about food in China that did not ring true. Nevertheless, the reports in the capitalist press do not inspire confidence either. I wonder how much these memoirs "admit" about the failures of the GLF ---- The CR clearly failed -- the rise in power of Deng is proof of that --- This memoir certainly will help people who study China improve their knowledge but for those of us who are not so well read, it would be really good to try to figure out whether. this narrative can be trusted ....
