Good am in particular to Tom, Jim and Dennis: Obviously the sparse postings by those discernibly female, is a concern. (We have not even touched on the issue of other diversities). In any case, I do have three simple points: i) Separation of *content* matter and *tone of debate* seems important to me. The slightly buried subtext of some comments thus far - might suggest that women are not interested in the subject of *geopolitics.* This is not correct in my view. Actually I do not think those who have remarked on the topic mean that in any real way. But it is almost implied, or at least 'could be implied'.
I think the *tone* of discussion has changed for the better. Actually I think I noticed this even during Lou's reign, he had become *less* combative and peremptory. Whether from illness or from understanding that his tone did matter - who can tell? Since Les & Mark B took over, I think the tone has even further improved. But perhaps it is all 'relative' - and it remains acerbic enough to deter some. ii) I suspect it is a matter also in part of 'role modelling'. Once some women do get involved more actively, more will do so. I saw this happen in my work life over the years 1980-2000. iii) Tom you wrote that people seem uninterested in your comments. I cannot agree, I recall very lively discussions around some of your points. If some got little response, could be that respondees like me - were actually intimidated by the more technical aspects of Marxist economics. Those are to you almost casually familiar. But also - if you perceived condescension in some remarks, that may reflect the 'style' vs 'content' issue, as noted above. Actually I think the range of topics seems pretty broad to me, but I agree it could certainly be even broader. Still - given the enormity of what is happening in the fulcrum of the Middle East, it is frankly astonishing that any other topics are aired.
