Hello Ira: Thanks - Very interesting review by David North of Beatty ( David North, ""Biography as demonology: Aidan Beatty’s The Party is Always Right: The Untold Story of Gerry Healy and British Trotskyism"; 17 September 2024 ). I was just a bit too young in London when Trevor Griffiths was writing and staging his plays to have been aware of this. But the description of Laurence Olivier playing a version of Gerry Healy sounds fascinating. As does the allegation by Ken Livingstone of an MI5 involvement against Healy. Naturally that would hardly be surprising. But I see no actual 'evidence' being cited by either Livingstone, or Beatty or - for that matter by North-in-rebutting. Is there any hard data?
Is the given description of Isaac Deutscher summoning and rebuking Healy - with no truth as North claims? Broder's interview with Beattey goes as this: "There is quite a notorious incident in 1966 when Ernie Tate, a Northern Irish member of the International Marxist Group, was very violently attacked by a group of Healy’s supporters outside a party meeting in London; Healy was present for this and essentially supervised the assault. The attack was bad enough that not only was Tate hospitalized but Healy was later forced to appear at a meeting with Isaac Deutscher and apologize."
