Not the issue, is it. The fSU wasn't "socialist" because Stalin's rule was "undemocratic." The fSU wasn't socialist because the revolution that established it occurred as a result of uneven and combined development. The UaCD imposed all the "tasks" of capitalist development on it and made a reciprocating international expansion of proletarian revolution the essential requirement, not for the revolution itself, but for the achievement of socialism in any particular location. That the Soviet Union was not socialist, but a "transitional form" is as indisputable as the fact that its origin was in a proletarian revolution. Questions of Stalin's "popularity" are irrelevant.
