Dan, thanks for your thoughtful response. Clearly, Maduro is acting like a typical politician using all the resources of government to cling to power. Joining the opposition and imperial condemnation is easy. But how can we support the workers? Do we support Eduardo Gonzales whom the US government “recognizes”? Opposition to sanctions is a given: what is the way forward?

I would like to receive from you one article that would not be biased (consciously or unconsciously), about any political situation anywhere in the world...

Fortunately this is about Venezuela and only one article. With the title; ‘Maduro has lost the streets’: in Venezuela’s barrios, former loyal voters risk all in protests'
Does the author thereby present untruths, exaggerations or does he insufficiently substantiate the statement in his title?

Moreover, he does not even have to do this; Maduro himself does it for him; since the elections he has never called on "the people" to counter the "threatening coup".

About a year ago his collegue did this in Bolivia;
“We need the Bolivian people to mobilise and organise themselves against this coup d’état and in favour of democracy,” Arce said in a video message filmed at the Great House of the People, the official presidential residence in Bolivia’s de facto capital of La Paz. Flanked by members of his cabinet, Arce declared: “We cannot allow, once again, attempted coups to claim Bolivian lives.” “Long live the people of Bolivia! Long live democracy!” the ministers shouted, thrusting their left fists into the air. “Long live our president, Luis Arce!”

Or the standard procedure when you know you have the people behind you...
and what a difference with Venezuela now;

Where Maduro nowadays only speaks a language that you would expect from a cornered Trump; tributes to the police, the army and the colectivos (the paramilitary units), disappearances, announcing the construction of two high-security prisons for detainees related to the protests. He said these would be “reeducation camps”, where prisoners would be required to participate in forced labour. I imagine you are going to need them if you brand every protester against the election results a terrorist, designation that can earn you sentences of up to 30 years...
Till now up to 2.000 people have been detained and refused access to legal assistance and unable to see their families (who do not know where they are detained)...
Venezuela’s Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López explained how all this is possible; he called the protests "an attempted coup d’état" and said that the armed forces reaffirmed their “absolute loyalty and unconditional support” to Maduro. Or; you don't bite the hand that feeds you well...

You state this crisis situation is caused by the US sanctions.
True, from history I know what sanctions can cause...
But may I then also state that;
  • the corruption
  • the cronyism
  • the economic mismanagement
  • the violation of human rights
  •  the arbitrary arrests
  • the forced disappearances
  • the extrajudicial killings
  • the abolition of almost all acquired social rights
  • the suppression of the freedom of the press
  • the creation of the "VenApp" snitch line...
  • the explosive growth of crime
  • the regression of democracy to an authoritarian state
are also in play...

Everyone on the left knows that Netanyahu chooses for the continuation of the war because he can then not be prosecuted legally.
One of the less well known reasons that Maduro wants to stay in power is:
"Losing power could have devastating consequences for Maduro, who is facing drug trafficking and corruption charges in the US and is under investigation for crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court. If he was to relinquish control without an agreement in place, he could end up in prison."

What Maduro accomplished fits into a global trend as the article below indicates;
https://carnegieendowment.org/research/2022/10/understanding-and-responding-to-global-democratic-backsliding?lang=en
Regarding bias: the US is mentioned more than a dozen times in this article, Venezuela only once.
But it is up to you to decide which procedures Maduro used to go from democracy to authoritarianism...

Dan, do you consider this an unbiased report? I see no mention of the sanctions; all blame goes to Maduro
