Mark: I agree with the basic sentiment that you raise: A worry about agent provocateurs.
However, in the situation that developed you can likely understand how happy the encampments were to get the support. And how difficult it was perhaps to 'ask for credentials'. But - I had the same reaction as you to the apparent vandalism of the sites including the library. What they could have perhaps more easily done, was to more pro-actively - insist and 'guard' against such behaviour. That behaviour feeds right in and puts a neat little label 'vandalism' - around the whole movement. Press fodder - as you say.
