Coup is a French word, and putsch is a German word. Both are used to mean an illegal use of force to take political power regardless of whether or not it is successful. At least that is what Webster's and Oxford dictionaries say. The only reason someone might think that putsches are failures is because of the infamous comic opera German beer Hall Putsch by the Nazi's which seems to have been DJ Trump's model for his comic and very failed attempt earlier today.
