Hi everyone,

You might be interested in this new paper that adds novel information about
an underreported behaviour in wild cetaceans - play with plastic litter.

Some highlights of this work are that dolphins and sperm whales actively
interact with marine debris, with sightings registered from a variety of
locations around the world and eleven species identified exhibiting this
playful behaviour; single-use plastics are the main category of litter
observed, indicating that more policies and awareness are needed to reduce
SUPs in the environment; the study refers to play with plastics of
considerable size or with openings as a potential key in subsequent
entanglements; these playful interactions might also be a cause of plastic
ingestion in these marine mammals.

This work is a baseline study entitled:
*"Cetaceans playing with single-use plastics (SUPs): A widespread
interaction with likely severe impacts"*
