Dear MARMAM

We are hosting a session focused on underwater acoustic observations and
techniques at the upcoming Ocean Sciences Meeting 2024 <
https://www.agu.org/Ocean-Sciences-Meeting>, which will take place on 18-23
February in New Orleans, Louisiana. The session title and description are
below. We would be very pleased to receive abstracts on all relevant
topics. The abstract deadline is Wednesday 13 September.

OT023: Exploring and Characterizing Deep and Coastal Ocean Soundscapes

Organizers:
Adrienne Copeland, adrienne.copel...@noaa.gov
Robert Dziak, robert.p.dz...@noaa.gov
DelWayne R Bohnenstiehl, drboh...@ncsu.edu

Cross listed Tracks: Deep Sea Processes and Exploration; Fish and
Fisheries; Marine Ecology and Biodiversity

Keywords: Soundscapes, acoustics, ecology, machine learning, ocean
technology

Passive acoustic methods provide an effective means for ocean environmental
monitoring, exploration and characterization at a variety of spatial
scales. Passive acoustics also offers a low impact method for environmental
surveying, and is not limited to good weather or daylight hours, making it
ideal for monitoring vulnerable marine animals and ecosystems. Recent,
global advances in seafloor fiber-optic cables, distributed acoustic
systems, surface buoys and uncrewed vehicles, coupled with developments in
artificial intelligence, offer an exciting future of near-real-time
evaluation of underwater soundscapes to address important environmental
issues of our time. Examples of emerging underwater passive acoustic
research initiatives include: offshore renewable energy, soundscape
modification in support of habitat restoration, shipping and impacts of
other anthropogenic sources of sound, ocean climate change impacts on
marine species distributions, ocean acidification verification, and ice
shelf instability for potential impact on global sea level rise. This
session aims to investigate the holistic use of sound to explore and
characterize the full pantheon of deep and coastal ocean sound sources and
levels, propagation conditions, new developments in signal detection and
classification, emerging passive acoustic monitoring technologies and
platforms, as well as assess human-made sound impacts on marine ecosystems.
