Hey all,
I've just got the first person forwarding mail from their old Hotmail to me, and
it appears to be a bit of a shitshow. I fully expected SRS to be used, and DMARC
to pass for most email as DKIM was kept intact, but this doesn't appear to be
the case.
* I've seen no instance of SRS being used
* Sometimes the envelope FROM is rewritten to be the Hotmail address itself,
but often it's just kept as the original address. I haven't been able to
identify a pattern, as I've seen both behaviors for the same sender.
* Seeing a lot of invalid DKIM signatures from senders I wouldn't expect them
from. Currently, I'm assuming Hotmail is breaking them while forwarding, but
I haven't taken the time to verify this.
* This causes quite a lot of rejects due to SPF and/or DMARC mismatches, and
ends up with me having to add a custom rule to my spam filter to make sure
email gets accepted for this forwarder.
Was I too optimistic for the state of forwarders in 2024/2025, or am I missing
something? The only thing I can find about Microsoft and SRS is an announcement
from 2023 that they'd start enforcing its use. Are their freemail services
lagging behind? And what's with the inconsistent FROM rewriting and DKIM
breaking?
Sorry, lots of questions, but would love to know if this matches your
experiences. Is it just Microsoft, or are many forwarders still like this?
Groetjes,
Louis
