Gateways to what? The way you pass mail from one kind of transport to another depends a lot on what's at each end. Compare for example, the way you do a fax-to-email gateway to an email-to-SMS one. Setting up an MTA to drop the messages into a folder is easy. (These days we usually use postfix rather than sendmail, but whatever.) The hard part is what you do once it's in the folder.
