Sendmail is actively maintained and works fine, but configuring it
is hard and the documentation is a 30 year stream of consciousness.

The m4 macros are a bit tricky, but all possible after reading the
relevant parts of the bat-book (sendmail 4th edition).

Its support is on usenet, comp.mail.sendmail, where the maintainer
is active but very grumpy.

I can't confirm that he is grumpy. He helped me even for stuff that is
rather basic in his opinion.
I also see that as a change: Only a small amount of maintainers does
user support.

Jeremy Harris, the most active Exim maintainer,
is also active on the exim user list.

Victor Duchovni, one of the *Postfix* maintainers, helps out users
on the *Exim* list when problems involve his areas of expertise.

Perhaps user support is more common amongst mailserver maintainers.
