Should and do. Not must. There's no formal requirement, just practical choice.

But, yeah, changing the rfc5321.mailfrom to an addresss of the mailing list, rather than the author, removes the author's SPF from consideration.

Rather than 'breaking' SPF, conventional mailing list behavior simply removes the original SPF trigger.


Do note that SPF only cares about the envelope, it doesn't require the
RFC821 envelope to be aligned with the RFC822 headers inside DATA.
Passing DMARC is a different problem.
