This is assuming that the POP password is different from the SMTP auth password
(which for most account it isn't).
So if you give Google your POP password you also enable them to send mail through your mail account. They most likely
wouldn't care and would not be using that option, but I would not like it anyway.
In addition, when you're using legacy mail (read UN*X) systems your mail account and login credentials may be the same.
I know that's nowadays considered malpractice, but it still happens.
