I suppose that first thing I saw could have possibly not been malware?
No. I actually saw 3 slightly different behaviors 3 times trying it, all with multiple redirects ending in a page saying in some way that I should update my outdated Flash. One was seemingly from Flash itself, with Adobe branding. Only problem there: the machine in question has never had Flash or anything from Adobe installed on it. Another was a fake Apple page with text saying "Update Your Flash Player Your Flash Player for Mac OS Might be out of date! Update the latest version for better performance" overlaid by an alert saying "The Latest Version of Flash Player is Ready to Install. Click ok to Download." Closing that tab gave me an alert asking if I was sure I wanted to leave the page, and confirming that kicked off a retaliatory stream of 2-byte downloads that I had to close the whole window to stop.
That's malware. Whatever they were wanting me to download, it was being misrepresented and they tried to punish me for not taking the bait.
