Well, without looking at your system, we can't really tell: it may be how 
you're holding it! ;-)

I have something similar for an Exchange account and it's working fine: it 
moves all the monitoring mails we get from various systems to another folder 
and marks them as read. This is the basic setup:

Conditions:
Any of the following:
From "is" "<ve...@example.com>"

Actions:
Move to Mailbox Account > Inbox > Monitoring
Set Tag/Keyword "Seen (Read)"

I also have a rule on the Monitoring folder that delete permanently mail that 
is not from within the last 30 days – this option becomes available if you do 
not select any part of the date.

Credit to Bill Cole for the initial idea, especially that it sometimes better 
to create a virtual mailbox and add actions to it.
