Hear hear! It’s annoying trend for some folks (nobody here,
thankfully) to include a 100KB mini-portrait of themselves as an
attachment in every email they send, even for mailing lists.
An interesting exercise is to examine the rate of growth of your annual
email archives over the past few years. I see a worrisome geometric
growth trend, even though I don’t think I’m processing significantly
more “real” information. The storage requirements keep swelling, and
it behooves us all to reduce the flashy clutter in our email, even if we
are ultimately “battling against the tide.”

Johnny,
Regarding the embedded graphics.
We embed a link to a logo on our website so that we have some graphic
in our signature
This is ioho the best way to embed a graphic in an email and prevents
that the graphics show-up in the email as attachments, something I
don’t like at all (understatement !).
Especially since it makes it “hard” to differentiate between
clutter in the signature and real—important/valuable— attachments.

Thank you, Malcolm, Verdon, and John. And especially Bill for
providing answers I was looking for. I've been on the net since 300
baud, acoustic coupler Arpanet connections, and get where you're
coming from. I'm a lawyer and 80% of my peers use Outlook with HTML
email, and many have graphics in their signatures. I'm essentially
competing with them for credibility.
Good news: I won't be emailing any of you in HTML. My emails to this
list are in plain text. :)
Better news?: After testing and consulting with a colleague, I'm
going to use MailMate with Markdown. I will not specify any font in
the email body. I know you all prefer no HTML, but does this at least
improve things? I figured out how to make my current Apple Mail
signature in HTML, and do have an HTML signature. But without any
embedded graphics at present.
One follow-up question: What does the Default Theme setting do? I've
tried all the Themes and my emails look the same, regardless. Thank
you again for your
replies. _______________________________________________
