Not sure if this is a 100% answer to your question.
What I use to be able to see to which mails I still need to respond is
on the source the following rule
[Any]
[Thread-Id] [is in] [Source-Inbox] [Thread-Id]
[References] [is in] [Source-Inbox] [References]
This allows to see all the new mails which are comming to the Inbox with
the associated archived & send mails.
I archive the received mails once I handled them
