I had this issue myself (related to using port 465). I believe it's fixed in [MailMate_r5970.tbz](http://updates.mailmate-app.com/archives/MailMate_r5970.tbz), but this is part of code which really needs a complete rewrite (I won't do that soon though). It's a mess of workarounds for buggy/unexpected behavior of various servers.
