Yes, these are the new images or to be more exact, these are the *first* mailboxes images to be included with MailMate. The images used (and mis-used) before were various system images. It was a stop-gap solution which has existed for far too long.
As this is a pre-release, I assume it's a work-in-progress and that "normal service will soon be resumed".
Sorry, it's more likely that the hidden preference to disable them will eventually be removed (but not soon).
On a more general note, I don't think I've ever made any visual change to MailMate without some users being strongly against it. I don't mind that. I know I cannot make everyone happy. This is exactly why I often add a preference to disable it at first. It is also still possible to hardcode your own icons as described in the [manual](https://manual.mailmate-app.com/customization#mailboxes-outline).
Maybe someone will make a set of colorful alternative mailbox icons for MailMate. Maybe I'll add a way to add color to the existing ones (if I can make it work well). We'll see.
