Create a smart mailbox and note the “Mailboxes” pane in the mailbox editor. If you click on the “-” to the right of the automatically added mailboxes then it'll switch to “No Mailboxes Added” or something like that. This is like the “Examples” mailbox.

Yes, it would be better if there was an actual menu item to create a group mailbox or to group an existing set of mailboxes.

Yes, I have several of these configured. They're useful for holding a sets of smart mailboxes underneath.
