The use of `.` is just a hack because it appears in most filenames. A `*` would of course be more appropriate if it was a reserved character.
I would actually like to use the “similar search” functionality for such things without even having to go to the search box — see ticket 1691 (https://freron.lighthouseapp.com/projects/58672-mailmate/tickets/1691)
As you probably noticed I'm quite a bit behind on the ticket system. I'll get to it eventually although I've already got 64 non-replied tickets in 2017 :|
