That failed status sounds like a problem itself. Let's deal with that
first:
* Open the Activity Viewer (⌥⌘0).
* Select the account under SOURCES and take it offline and then online
(via the Mailbox menu).
* Wait a bit for it to fail.
* Use “Help ▸ Send Server Logs”.
Then I'll review the logs (off list).
