do have purcharsed an apple care support plan and
I asked them what to do about that. The aswer was:

„/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister
-kill -r -all local,system,user“
and then setting mailmate as the default client on Mail.app.
I also described this as a workaround for Apple in my bug report
(October 2015), but it has side effects since you also lose other
changes, e.g., your “Open with” preferences.
I think we can safely conclude now that Apple does not really consider
this bug a significant problem :-)
