however this issue was so annoying that I removed IMAP account, added it
again and the error has gone.

I looked into this and it turns out that I think I already made this
workaround (to work around a different issue). You should try the
latest test version: Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in
the Software Update preferences pane (r5205).
