I wasn't clear - I meant the blue bar that drops down during search. All
I'd like is for the [–] button to be on the left-hand side - but then
if no-one else has asked for it, moving it will probably just cause
confusion.

How about somehow bringing the buttons across to sit over the message
list? A minor tweak, but handy.
Note that you can right-click the toolbar and then select “Customize
Toolbar...” to change it yourself. I'm not sure moving them would
work well in general. (In any case, I'll eventually change how
searching from the toolbar works.)
