There was so much happening at the time. I ended up with a crash while trying to send a test message. When I restarted and tried to open the common drafts smart folder, it would crash every time. Then I decided to look at the drafts smart folder for each account. I could access those individually and delete the draft items.
Nothing like that happened again since and I wouldn't know how to reproduce the issue.
