AFAIK nautilus needs to "look inside" an SVG file only if it needs to
generate a thumbnail. So disabling the thumbnail (IF you dont need
thumbnails) might be the solution. Are you sure you disabled thumbnails
in nautilus? Did you check if thumbnails are not created anymore for
any type of file?
You can also also edit the display manager options for disabling
thumbnails. It might be gnome or lightdm. You might have to use
"gconf-editor" or "|dconf-tools"| depending on ubuntu version.

Folders contain normal svg files still have no problem. In my
experience, svg files using "Create tiled clone" causes the problem.
