Hi, Same issue I faced two years back. Aprox 2 years back, I bought a DELL Vostro Laptop and I installed Ubuntu 8.04 LTS in it. I have successfully installed the system, after that I could update it very fast. But after sometime the ethernet showed some problems. I could not fix it anyway. Then I formatted the drive and reinstalled Ubuntu. It worked well for the first time. But after a little bit of time the same issue occurred again. I thought it may be a problem of the hardware. Then I contacted Dell, they requested me to install Windows in it, otherwise they cannot assist me. Then I tried Windows. There were no problems. One week after, again I formatted the drive and tried Debian. It had no issues. Till now it is working.
Note: In my home desktop, I use Debian Lenny and Ubuntu 10.04. All machines are working properly without any issues.
