check the lsmod o/p to make sure module intel hda and other modules are
loaded.also,I think u hafta check that alsa is running.after logging in
debian session,try in a root terminal to restart alsa,alsa-utils as
"/etc/init.d/alsa restart" .also,make sure you have esound,esound-clients
installed on ur system and also hopes that ur using Gnome Desktop!.if ur in
kde,u hafta configure artsd for sound server.
and lastly,BY ANY CHANCE,are u using a custom compiled kernel?if yes,make
sure ur ALSA is compiled with support options as modules.also,use a
2.6.xx-686 kernel.
if ur stuck on Debian Etch stable,get latest alsa-1.0.15 packages from some
backports repositories like http://backports.org ,
http://debian-unofficial.org etc and also i found a interesting page from
