hmm, The very question of
"What can we do to the code to make Linux (distributions) better, so that it's used by more people, the very same people who'd rather pirate windows/osx86 now?" is a really scary one. WHY should we dumb down? To whom is the market share of Linux more important ? redhat, novell, ubuntu (canonical), madriva ..... apple, microsoft .... how does it affect the coders, users and kernel hackers? even if there are no more any linux companies, the community will be there. did we get here because one or a group of linux companies had dominent market share? no did we get here because companies threw million of dollers to a project? no so who cares if some script kiddies who is only bothered about orkut, games, mp3's and dvd's can't be bothered to install my favourite operating system and have a look at the code? bollocks to that. The author of the article is accusing linux community of being condescending while being one himself. PS: the follow-up article "Three more things linux community doesn't get" http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=424 PS2: You don't just dump down the software but yourself too....
